Beginning Beekeeping Class Overview

So you’re interested in beekeeping?

.

The Beekeepers of the Northern Shenandoah is once again offering a Beginning Beekeeping class, beginning in mid-February.

.

The class is designed to get you started in beekeeping.  We assume you’ve had no prior exprience with honeybees.  It includes everything you need to know to get through your first couple of years.  We’ve taught this class locally for the past eight years or so; it is always well received.   We’re actually part of a consortium of Beginning Beekeeping classes that are taught across Northern Virginia this time of year.

.

The class will meet for about eight sessions.  Most are classroom based, but the last time or two we meet will be in a working apiary, so everyone who wants to can get some hands on time with honeybees.

.

Over the last few years, there has been a growing interest in beekeeping.  This year, we’re teaching three sections of the class, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.   Offering several sections helps us give you options regarding where and when, and it helps keep the class sizes smaller.  Each section covers the same material.

.

The cost of the class is $100. payable on the first night of class.  This covers a couple beekeeping books you’ll get and other class material.  One fee covers your family, so if a parent/child or husband/wife pair want to take the class together, one fee covers both.

.

If you decide to start hives of your own (most do), the equipment, bees, etc. will be an additional expense.  First year total expenses can average $650 to 750. , but subsequent year expenses are typically low.  We will talk you through these decisions in the class.

.

If you are sincerely interested in taking the course with us, I need to hear back from you asap.   Please go to the home page and walk through the “Application” process.  An instructor will be in touch with you shortly.

.

Also, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I look forward to hearing back from you.
